Fun Fact of the Day: So it seems one early member of André the Giant’s posse was none-other-than legendary novelist/playwright/poet Samuel Beckett.
Historical Meet-Ups explains:
In 1953, fresh off the success of Waiting for Godot, Beckett bought a plot of land near the hamlet of Molien, in the commune of Ussy-sur-Marne, about forty miles northeast of Paris. There he built a cottage for himself with some help from a group of locals, including a Bulgarian-born farmer named Boris Rousimoff. Over the years, Beckett and Rousimoff became friends and would occasionally get together for card games. Rousimoff had a son, André, known as Dédé, who was something of a physical marvel. By the age of 12, André was over six feet tall and weighed 240 pounds. No school bus could hold him, and his family lacked the means to buy a car big enough to schlep him back and forth to school in Ussy-sur-Marne. Enter Boris’ old card-playing buddy Beckett, who owned a truck and was more than willing to pay his friend back for his help with the cottage by giving a lift to his enormous pituitary case of a son on his drives into town. Years later, when recounting his conversations with Beckett (which he did often), André the Giant revealed that they rarely talked about anything besides cricket.

  6. Collard Green Smoothie

    2 cups baby spinach

    1 cup collard greens

    1 kiwi

    1 champagne mango

3 stalks celery (depending on size)

    1/4 cup frozen blueberries

    chopped ginger

    3 basil leaves

    2 tbps flax seed

About 250 calories, 8 grams of protein and 11 grams of fiber. Also 5 grams of good fat from the flax. Turned out pretty tasty! The store was out of kale, that’s how I ended up with collard greens, but it didn’t make a noticeable difference.

  8. Mango Melon Green Smoothie

    2 cups baby spinach leaves

    1 cup kale

    1 cup watermelon, cut up

    1 cup frozen blueberries

1 champagne mangos (they’re yellow, oblong mangoes from Mexico - I find them at Costco and they’re so good and so easy to peel)

    2 tbps ground flax seed

Mix it all up in the blender and voila! This one is kind of a funny color, but it’s really good. It didn’t need much added water either because of the watermelon.

According to myfitnesspal, it’s around 330 calories, 5 grams fat (good fats from the flax), 10 grams of protein and 12 grams of fiber.

Morning Culture: “Michael Meets Mozart” — Jon Schmidt and Steven Sharp Nelson’s “hip hop/classical mash-up” created using 1 piano and 100 cello tracks.

On the recording, Steven Sharp Nelson laid down over 100 tracks including cello textures never known possible. Every single sound on the video was made using only the instruments shown: piano, cello, mouth percussion and kick drum.

    [hyst.]
